Growing up, North had aspirations of becoming a professional ballerina. In her teen years, North was a bit rebellious. While attending Southern Methodist University, she was scouted by a male model during her spring break. His interest helped her land modeling jobs for local news papers and department store catalogs.

Milian has released three studio albums, and is currently recording a fourth album, Elope, which is scheduled for a late summer or fall release. Milian's self-titled debut album was released in 2001, following a collaboration with Ja Rule. The album spawned the singles "AM to PM" and "When You Look at Me"; both peaked in the top three on the UK Singles Chart.



Milian's second studio album was entitled It's About Time (2004), a reference to the amount of time it took her to complete. The album's lead single, "Dip It Low", became Milian's biggest hit to date, peaking at number two in the UK and number five in the United States.



Milian's third studio album, So Amazin' (2006), featured Cool & Dre producing the majority of the album. The album's only single, "Say I", saw moderate commercial success worldwide, as did the album itself. A month after the release of So Amazin', Milian's representative confirmed that she had left the Island Def Jam record label due to "creative differences".



Milian is working to release her new album, Elope, under a joint venture between Radio Killa, Interscope and MySpace Records. The album's first single, "Us Against the World", was written by Milian.



Although Milian is best known for her singing career, she originally wanted to be an actress. Her first lead role was in the 2003 film Love Don't Cost a Thing, and subsequently had main roles in Be Cool and the horror film Pulse.



Milian is set to appear in The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, alongside Matthew McConaughey, and in the straight-to-DVD film Bring It On: Fight to the Finish. Milian has been described as a role model, and her mother manages her musical and theatrical careers.
